Dear Maralee:
My wife and I will be staying with the mom of a friend from college for two nights when we travel to St. Louis for an interview in October. What should we do to show her our gratitude?
As soon as you arrive, verbally thank her for inviting you, say how much you appreciate her kind offer, and tell her how you’ve been looking forward to your time together.
You’ll also want to bring a gift and give it to her shortly after you arrive. Frames, cookbooks, perfumed soaps, napkin rings, or just about anything monogrammed with the family’s last name or initial are all great choices.
Verbally thank her again as you’re leaving. When you arrive back home, send a handwritten thank-you note as a permanent reminder of your gratitude. In it, restate what you said as you were leaving and mention a fond memory from your two days together!
